When you first arrive in America, you usually have no credit history. This does not mean you are bad with money. It simply means the system does not know you yet.

Your credit score affects:

  • Renting an apartment

  • Getting a car loan

  • Qualifying for a credit card

  • Sometimes even job applications

Here is how to build credit safely:

Step 1: Open a Bank Account
Start with a checking account at a reputable bank or credit union.

Step 2: Apply for a Secured Credit Card
A secured card requires a small deposit (usually $200–$500). This becomes your credit limit.

Step 3: Use Less Than 30% of the Limit
If your limit is $300, try not to spend more than $90.

Step 4: Pay On Time — Every Time
Payment history is the most important factor in your credit score.
